What Is a Router?

A router is a network equipment that connects our home or office devices to the internet. A router connects to the internet via modem; typically, the two are joined with a physical link, like an Ethernet cable.

The router then creates a local network, allowing devices to communicate with each other and share resources. The router also acts as a firewall, protecting your devices from unwanted access from the internet.

Routers are also responsible for assigning IP addresses to devices on the local network. This is done using a protocol called DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

Routers can be wired or wireless. Wireless routers are more common these days, as they allow devices to connect to the network without the need for physical cables.

Routers are also responsible for managing the traffic on the network, ensuring that data packets are sent to the correct destination.

Does resetting a router change your public IP address?

Resetting your router may or may not immediately change your IP address. Some ISPs will assign a new address as soon as you reconnect, while others may take some time. You can contact your ISP to learn about their policies regarding IP address changes. However, if you're using a static IP address, it won't automatically update when you reset your router. In this case, you'll need to manually update it.
